Yes, I'm a nerd. No, I don't know if the game will have much lasting appeal. I pre-ordered Star Trek Online after debating it with myself for a good week or so. Hadn't been looking forward to it, hell I didn't even really know about it until they started advertisements on Steam.

My Aion subscription renewal was nearing, and I decided instead of blowing 40 bucks on a 3 month sub for a game I hadn't really been playing much since November, I'd give this game a go. Pretty much literally being the only person who had still been logging onto the game from our group, I felt a bit lonely. I guess that's how the new mmo cookie crumbles though. Lopsided server where I'm on the losing side (think Stormrage Horde, but much worse... and the fact that the only pvp in the game is same realm open world pvp) along with the fact that I am deep in the grind-heavy levels where killing 4 monsters gives more experience than some quests. So... kill 500 bajillion trees and worry about lvl 50 ganking parties, only to realize that currently there isn't much content to look forward to, or quit and go try something else.

Anyone else here into Star Trek? More specifically the online mmo coming out that I just preordered? Would be fun to have *someone* else join in, especially if they were already going to try out the game. I've been watching people broadcast video of them playing beta on Jtv, seems fun looking to me (though, I guess not too deep). I've been a moderate Star Trek fan since I was a wee lad, watching ST:TNG before going to bed, 9-10 PM.

Funny, I ordered it from Amazon to get a hard copy, but will technically have the game before its shipped due to digital downloads and the head-start program. It's nice having the box though, it can go next to my FFXI and Chains of Promathia boxes, WoW and 2 expansions boxes. Hmm, what is missing in that list from my mmo history, oh yea Aion, oh well I guess its best to wipe that game from my memory. Interesting how every major retailer and digital copy distribution system has its own *bonus* content. Seems the exclusive bonus content idea is a popular marketing method lately. Amazon gives you a reclaimed Borg bridge officer, which I thought was much cooler than all of the other bonus content (especially the equipable items that are probably shitty after chugging through the noob levels, like the bonus items in Aion, other than the wings of course, they rock).

Now I'm rambling so I'll shut up here. Anybody buying it, looking at it? Or do you all want to laugh at me for shelling out money that could be used on something else? Share your opinions!

It looks decent, and Inchion (Dalakoi, Sunaj, whatever his name is!) is playing it.

Panchu was interested as well. He has talked frequently about it, but that dosn't mean he'll get it. Can't hurt to ask, though.

I've been playing Cryptic's other MMO, Champions Online. And while the game is fun for a short while, it loses steam pretty quick. STO seems to be along the same problem. I've heard a lot of praise, but an equal amount of discontent.

As a pre-order, you should have gotten an open beta invite. Did they not give you one?

Yea I should, the issue is that I pre-ordered from Amazon, and they won't send the code for 2 days after the order through e-mail. I suppose to prevent people from pre-ordering, getting a code, then canceling the order right away. I was also concerned a bit with being able to download it on my campus network since we are allotted 1 gig down/upload per day, after which you are stuck an a very very sloooow connection. But, either their system is broken or something changed over winter break, since I was able to download all 7 gigs yesterday without a large cutoff.

I will poke around with the beta this weekend. Mostly to get my initial direction down when selecting a race and class (though I think I'll be a human no matter what, Vulcan could be neat as well).

I've heard the comments on it being like champions online, which I had no interest in since I'm not really a comic book super hero type of nerd. So, it might get repetitive fast, but I think it will be fun to play for a few months at least. Too bad the game takes place so many years after the television series. Then again, some of the characters might be still alive due to longer life spans of the future. Maybe somewhere in the game world, old grandpa Picard will be complaining about all of the new recruits that show up to take screenshots of themselves dancing with him. Or if he is dead, they'll have some memorial for players to dance on top of. Right next to which there will be a Kirk memorial where special edition owners will be standing on top of, using their KHAAAAAN emotes.

I guess that is another thing to think about, hoping that the community will add to the game experience, and not be a bunch of angry immature ass hats. At least you can play the game yourself, instanced away from everyone else, to avoid jerks who aren't in your party.

I was going to try it during the open beta until I found out it was one of those not open betas.

The CO community isn't too happy with STO as it has pulled development from CO, which was such an incomplete game at launch.

I fear the same for STO in that it's an underfinished product. CO is fun, but the fact remains that there is little to do in regards to leveling path, and endgame content. I still have an active CO account, but I rarely sign in these days as the fun factor has started to wane and I only log on to talk to SG friends.

Cryptic also has this annoying habit of making you have to invest big in their products at a point in time where the future of the product is uncertain. CO had the same lifetime sub offers. You only had up to the day it came out to order, and it was also in limited quantity to top it all off with. There was a huge crapstorm when Cryptic announced that they had run out of a product that was intangible.

Also, the beta as being open is retarded. It's still a closed beta, but there just isn't an NDA. When I received my beta key (I made it into the closed beta for CO via an e-zine contest), that key was only good for the beta. I still had to register a retail key for when the game launched, so I can't imagine Amazon not handing out beta keys based on assumptions that someone would get a free retail key out of the deal. Gamestop shipped out electronic keys for beta when CO went open, and then shipped the retail key at launch. In fact, due to the nature of digital distribution, there was a 4 day grace period that a beta key was still active past the launch date.

I was looking at it, but I think I'm just going to hold out for FF14. Never really was into Star Trek and I don't really feel like spending $50 + a month sub just to find out I wasn't going to like it anyway.

I am already playing. I was in the beta. Wow was getting me down. Daily grind over and over. STO has its troubles but it just came out. I like it a lot. If there is going to be a guild in STO then sign me up. Or let me know on here. Lieutenant Commander Tony Chapman of the USS Nantucket. Sorry I have not been on WoW any. But I am still a member here. And there when I feel like going back. Very Happy

Zoe!

Is your brother playing it?! If so, I bet I know his character's name...

Also, if he is playing, it'd be worth making Dr. GOD just to mess with him...not that I'd ever dream of tormenting him...really...but just sayin'...
